THE CONCEPT
The title of this exhibition “Punto y Raya” (Dot and Stripe) refers to the divisions of territories on maps, often marked with such symbols. ·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-·-
In this exhibition, Candela Pan’s works focus on the sea as a paradoxical symbol: of frontier and of freedom. On the one hand, the sea represents a physical limit, a separating line of territories that has witnessed thousands of migration stories. On the other, it is a landscape of openness and immensity, with a seemingly infinite horizon line that invites exploration and dreaming. However, this duality of the sea as a space of limits and freedom is also reflected in its cartographic representation: while terrestrial maps are precise and detailed, the ocean remains largely a mystery.
Today, although maps are fairly reliable, 70% of the planet’s surface is covered by water, and in the oceans it is often difficult to map the seabed. It is precisely in this unexplored space that Candela Pan finds inspiration. With her aquatic works, the artist reflects on the mystery of the deepest underwater world, a place sometimes inaccessible to humans, unknown and, above all, free of “dots and stripes”.
